Paperpal is freemium: there is a free tier you can work in and paid plans above it. It is one of 404 freemium tools in the catalog, all labelled the same way so you are never surprised by a paywall.
Paperpal does 4 things the catalog singles out: Ai rewriting, translation and citation finding for manuscripts; ms word add-in and chrome extension for docs and overleaf; free plan: 5 ai uses per day and 200 language suggestions per month; pdf chat, plagiarism and ai detection on paid tiers.
Ai2 Paper Finder (Asta) is the closest free alternative: it sits in the same Academic Research sub-category and is free. alphaXiv, PaperQA2 and ResearchRabbit also start free. The full list is on the alternatives page.
