Chai is listed under AI Companions & Roleplay, in the AI Chat & Assistants category on Flocci AI Tools. Massive library of community chat bots. It is freemium — a usable free tier with paid plans above it, and it lives at chai-research.com.
Chai is freemium: there is a free tier you can work in and paid plans above it. It is one of 426 freemium tools in the catalog, all labelled the same way so you are never surprised by a paywall.
Chai needs to be installed or self-hosted — it doesn't run in a browser tab. It is available on iOS and Android. You can sign in with a Google account.
Chai does 4 things the catalog singles out: Massive library of community chat bots; mobile-first roleplay experience; build and tune your own bots; free daily messages.
Character.AI is the closest free alternative: it sits in the same AI Companions & Roleplay sub-category and is free tier + paid plans. Kindroid, Nomi and Replika also start free. The full list is on the alternatives page.
